Autism diagnosis 🪱🌻🪱🌻🪱🌻
Hi it's auggie👋🏼
Let's have a yarn about autism diagnosis
So as of November 2023 I'm not legally diagnosed autistic and that's ok!
About a year ago I came across cholé Hayden in a teen breath magazine. I read the article about her countless times, this is when I realised I might be autistic.
I started doing some research on autism including watching all of cholé's YouTube videos and even found myself on the 'autism side if tictok'. I found that most websites weren't very helpful, just information about male toddlers. At this point I still didn't accept that I was autistic.
I started at a new school where all my friends knew they where autistic and they just assumed I was too. That was when I realised that I was rather sure.
I tried bringing it up in conversation with my mum multiple times but she never caught on. One of my friends said infont of my mum 'they look autistic' and my mum got quite offend in my defense.
Eventually in march I gathered up all these derect quotes from websites about autism that matched my experience. I emailed it to my mum and sat anxiously in my room. She replied 'yes maybe, we can get you tested.' Only if it was that easy.
Not long after I showed the list to my GP who asked someone more questions about my infant life. She referred us to autism wa (I think) they'd us an email.
I'm actually not sure exactly where I heard this but someone told me that getting a diagnosis would make it difficult to adopt a child so I ignored the email.
In june I got admitted to Camhs for a diagnosis. I had an awful experience with a older male physiatrist. He treated me as if I was a child and said things like 'everyone has autism' and 'your just a bit different' He suggested that I got an autistim assessment. A bit confused there, I thought he was doing that.
In July, I ended up in the ED and spoke to a lovely social worker called Jane. I told her my worries regarding a diagnosis and she told me it shouldn't make a difference. She strongly recommend getting a diagnosis so I could have ndis access to therapys eg. Ot, dietitian.
In August I got a letter from camhs suggesting I get an ADHD assessment in two years. Seriously.
I hadn't really made any efforts to get a diagnosis since. I don't really mind If I get one or not at the moment. I know I'm certainly autistic and the people around me mostly believe me.
It's rather disheartening that I, a 14 year old with only a year of research, seems to know more than the professionals.
Anyway I'd love to hear your thoughts, if you have a diagnosis and if you want one.
Have a lovely day!💋🫂🧼🦃🍊🪩
