autistic burnout πŸ«‚πŸ«§πŸ«‚πŸ«§πŸ«‚

Hiya πŸ‘‹πŸ½
Let's have a yarn about autistic burnout

Autistic burnout is something that really need to be talked about so let's spread some awareness

So one year ago I couldn't leave the house, I couldn't go to school, have freinds over and barely eat. This was all caused by autistic burnout.

Burnout is caused by doing too much and not allowing yourself to rest or be 'autistic'
What I mean by that is masking, basically unconsciously pretending to be alistic. Things that are considered masking:
Forcing yourself to make eye contact
Not allowing yourself to stim
Avoiding talking about things your passionate about to seem less 'weird'
Forcing yourself to eat things you don't want to
Ignoring your sensory issues
And lots of other things

Burnout can last days, weeks, months or even years. Your likely to suffer from multiple panic attacks per day and everything causes anxiety attacks. You'll usually also feel extremely physically ill as well.

Unfortunately I have driven myself deep back into burnout again, just in time for the holiday season but I'm hoping it doesn't last because Lucky I know all about autistic burnout and how to prevent it and cope.

How to avoid burnout:

Limited masking
Give yourself a day or two to recover after an event
Reduce sensory stimuli when you need a rest
Learn that it's ok to say no to plans
You don't have to put 100% into every day
Stim
Take time for yourself and get to know them
Basic self care
Have days where you do absolutely nothing

How to cope with burnout:

REST
Take days off
Rewatch movies and videos or books
Limit sensory stimuli
Don't try to prosses something new
Lay in bed all day
Don't force yourself to socialise (including online)
Do or resurch something you love or hyperfixate on
Draw or do colouring pages
Eat your favourite foods
Look after yourself phisicly (because you're probably feeling pretty awful)
Don't exercise if you don't want to
Try keep your room tidy to reduce stimuli
Have a nice shower and put on some comfy clothes so you feel clean
Wash your bedding so you have a clean environment
Play meditation music

There's lots of ways to look after yourself and cope with the not so fun parts of being autistic so find the things that work for you and don't worry if some of my surgestings don't work for you, we're all different.

Have a well rested day

See yas love yas ---auggie
